The Blue-White Oxford Folding Chair is the chair most people picture when they think of a camping chair: a fabric sling stretched between a folding steel frame, with armrests, a cup-friendly posture, and a side pocket for the things you want within reach. We build this one in a blue and white color block, with a white panel running up the center of the backrest and a matching white strip on the seat, set against a blue oxford fabric. The look is clean and coastal, and it photographs well on a beach, by a lake or on a grassy pitch.
The frame is silver-gray powder-coated steel, which is the finish we use on our everyday chairs because it hides scratches better than a painted black frame and it does not show dust. It folds along the standard X-cross with a side hinge, and it opens in one motion. The armrests are padded with a soft sleeve that runs the length of the arm, so your forearm rests on something comfortable rather than on bare tube.
The fabric is oxford polyester, the same weave used on camping tents and backpacks. It is water-repellent, so a light dew or an unexpected shower beads up and runs off instead of soaking in, and it dries quickly if it does get wet. The weave is tight enough that it does not snag on branches, and it is easy to sponge clean if you spill a drink or get mud on it. The blue is a medium lake blue, and the white center panel keeps the chair from looking too heavy.
On the right side of the seat, a small zippered fabric pocket hangs from the frame. It is sized for a phone, a set of keys, a lip balm and a small pack of tissues, which is exactly what most people want within arm’s length while they sit. It keeps those items off the grass and out of the way, and it folds flat with the chair so you do not have to remove it before packing.
Every leg ends in a black rubber anti-slip foot. The feet are flared and slightly soft, which spreads the load on soft ground and stops the chair from rocking on pavement. They are the same design we use across our folding chair line, so replacement feet are cheap and easy to swap if they wear out after a few seasons.
The seat sits at a normal dining-chair height, which means it pairs naturally with a folding camp table at the right height for eating. It is also a good height for getting up and down without assistance, which matters for older campers and for anyone who wants a chair they can sit in for a meal and then move on.
This is our most straightforward folding chair. It does not recline, it does not rock, and it does not come with a built-in cooler. What it does is open quickly, hold a comfortable sitting posture, and fold back into a slim bundle that slides into a carry bag and into the trunk. It is the chair we recommend as a first camp chair, a spare chair, or a beach chair that you do not stress about.
